Lord of the Mysteries is a Chinese web novel by “Cuttlefish That Loves Diving,” blending steampunk, Lovecraftian horror, and xianxia elements. The protagonist, Zhou Mingrui, inexplicably awakens in the body of Klein Moretti, a university graduate in a world resembling the Victorian era. In this world of steam engines and occult secret societies, Klein joins the Nighthawks (a clandestine order) and gains access to the “Gray Fog,” enabling communication with other paranormal “Beyonders”. Posing as the figure “Mr. Fool,” Klein organizes a secret Tarot Club alongside Audrey Hall, Alger Wilson, Derrick Berg and others, using it to investigate supernatural mysteries. The official press blurb captures the tone: “Through the storm of steam and machinery… I found myself in a world of guns, cannons, giant ships, airships… potions, divination, curses, hanged men… This is the legend of the Fool”.
